Lager Experiment 1

I wanted to do an experiment with lagers I made two of these and one came out better than the other. Adding 1 pound of wheat and oats to get a sense of what that would do to the beer. I mashed it at 152 degrees and started the boil, bagging up the hops. I then added 1oz of Cascade at the 60 min mark of the boil and 1 oz of Magnum at 15 minutes.

Butter Beer

This new batch is a copy of one I brewed earlier last year. I haven’t been brewing much, so I thought I would get an old favorite out and try some experiments. I will be brewing this more times till the end of the year. I did want to get a Barleywine in as well. The last batch was great, so I had to bring this favorite back for more. I am using 1 oz of Styrian Golding hops at 45 minutes and then used Saaz at 15 minutes, the last change in flavor wasn’t that noticeable and made a great flavor. I’m interested in how an extra 5 minutes will change this. I’m sure it won’t be much and this will come out with the same butterscotch flavor as always. Next time I will try another experiment.

This is a non-traditional take on a Helles. Sweet and crisp with some wheat for balance and body. Mashed in with 6 gallons and a 1.25 gallon sparge. I ran this for a 90 min boil. With 1oz Hersbrucker at 55 mins and .75 oz Hersbrucker at 75 mins.

Danube Picnic

This tasty beer really hit it off last time. This is an easy brew and it is so light and savory. The water was provided by Black and Veatch. I wanted to brew this early, as it will be served in June and I wanted to give it 8 weeks time to lager and finish. I mashed it at 152 degrees and started the boil, bagging up the hops. I then added 1oz of Hallertau at the 60 min mark of the boil and again at 15 minutes.

Choco Porter

A now fantastic recipe I can rely on. This is a beer I can share with a lot of people. It turns out I will be sharing this beer with a lot of people. I have been selected to brew a few beers for an upcoming water treatment event. I wanted to use a solid beer recipe to make this magic happen. I am tweaking this recipe with some extra 2-Row grain. I am splitting up the amount of Maris Otter, and freshly milling the grain for the mash. The free water comes from a local water treatment plant. It’s always nice to get some free stuff. I wanted to knock this out of the park and use some great ingredients from Windsor Homebrew Supply. Starting out with basically RO water, I will have to add some calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate to hit the flavor profile and overall character. I will be using Golding Hops(60 mins) and Cascade(10 mins).

Butter Beer

The Holidays always get me sentimental about beers of Holidays past. With the glut of 2-Row that I have, I wanted to re-create a favorite to see how the different grains affect the flavor. The 2-row I ground up and it smelled like marshmallows and bread. Good grain makes good beer, I intend to find out. I used 1 oz of Styrian Golding hops at 45 minutes and then used Saaz at 10 minutes, changing the flavor from previous versions. I’m interested in the change. SafAle 05 yeast always gets me a great result. I am confident I will get a great result.

Festbier

I took this back to basics and challenged myself to make a Lager with 2-row. I let the ingredients do the talking for me and see how it will turn out. When I milled the grain it smelled like marshmallows. I hope the beer turns out similarly.

I boiled for 90 minutes. I did an ounce of Tettnanger at 60 and an ounce of Hersbrucker at 20.

OatStout

I was gifted some 2 Row and I thought I would go out and get a few ingredients and see if I could whip something up really quickly. Seat of the pants-type stuff. Really pushing the boundaries. I went into my local brew shop and told them that I had a ton of 2 Row and wanted to make a stout. 1 0z of EKG in at 60 and 20 mins. SafAle 05 and into the fermentation fridge. November should be a great time to crack open one of these.

Festbier

A new bier to celebrate Oktoberfest is what the need calls for these days. I recently was gifted some grain and I wanted to put it to the test.

I kept the boil to 60 minutes and forgot to add the hops in until 30 minutes left with the boil. I did a half ounce at 30 and another half of Hersbrucker at 20.
